Please review the answers to common questions below before contacting us regarding a Driver/Contractor position.
Do you have part-time openings?
Unless the ad or job listing specifically states "Part-time", we generally only have full-time openings. If the job posting is for part-time, the days/hours are usually very specific and will be stated in the listing text. Please be sure to read the entire job posting before calling and asking if we have certain hours available.
What are the hours for full-time drivers?
Driver hours vary depending on several factors including workload and personal preferences. Our Dispatch Office is open from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM and most deliveries are completed during these hours. It is important to note the difference between "Available Hours" and "Working Hours". Individuals with experience with on-demand courier know that daily workflow varies and weekly earnings are directly associated with number of hours of availability. Actual working hours are usually less than available hours, with "standby time" varying from 0 minutes on busy days to an hour or more total on less busy days. Experienced drivers make use of standby/downtime to take care of personal business while remaining available for work opportunities as they arise.
Do I use my own vehicle or your company vehicle?
Unless otherwise stated in the job listing, all openings are for independant contractors. By law, contractors must supply their own equipment (including vehicle), and are paid their entire gross earnings (no taxes withheld). Contractors receive a 1099 instead of a W2 and deduct all work related expenses (including vehicle) on Schedule C of their personal tax return.
What kind of vehicle is best? What vehicle types do you accept?
Please check the text of the job listing, as the vehicle requirement (or preference) varies for some openings. Most of our current contractors use minivans, vans, or covered (fuel efficient) pickup trucks. However, a large percentage of our deliveries may be easily handled by a small car, and hybrid hatchbacks or fuel-effcient wagons are often ideal. Some of our contractors use SUVs, but we do not consider this vehicle type ideal for the work involved due to the low mileage/cargo-capacity ratios.
Do you have any Routes? Do I go to the same stops every day?
Unless the position is advertised as a "Route", the opening is in our Rush/On-Demand department, which represents approximately 80% of our total business. Drivers deliver to different locations and areas every day, although most stops are repeats as opposed to new. Typically, after 3-4 full-time weeks on the job, a new driver will be familiar with over half of the assigned addresses, and more experienced drivers will only need to refer to a map for less than 1 out of every 10 stops.
What areas do you service? What area(s) will I be delivering to?
Our primary service area is the Baltimore/Washington corridor, including both entire metropolitan regions. The majority of stops are within the counties along the I-95 corridor and near the beltways (eg Howard, Montgomery, Prince Georges, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Fairfax,
Loudon) as well as both major cities. Drivers must be equiped with maps (GPS recommeded but optional) and able to find addresses in outlying counties for some percentage of their deliveries.
How much money do your drivers make?
Green Delivery Service is a small, family run business with very low turn-over. Contract drivers are paid a commission for each delivery completed. Commssions are a direct percentage of the price charged to the end customer, which is based on mileage, weight, and other factors. We pay higher than average commissions and our experienced, full-time drivers average from $750-$2,000 weekly (more for the most ambitious and hard workers), depending on several factors including hours available, vehicle type, and personal ability. Indivuals with little or no previous courier experience can expect to earn $500 - $750 (for full-time/full-week) in the first few weeks, and gradually more as they become familiar our common stops and are able to complete a higher number of deliveries per day. The length of this "learning" period varies for each individual but most are considered "experienced" after 3 to 6 months of performing the work on a daily basis.
How are taxes/withholdings handled for Contract Drivers? Are drivers reembursed for any expenses?.
Please refer to the question above "Do I use my own vehicle or your company vehicle?" for the detailed answer to these questions. No taxes are deducted from paychecks of Contract Drivers. Expenses are not reembursed and are the responsibility of the driver, however, most or all expenses are deductible for tax purposes. Fuel costs are built in to the rate billed to the shipper/customer as part of the base-rate, which is determined primarily based on the mileage between the pickup and delivery.
Is this work a "gig" or an app?
No! Although we provide a web app to make the job easier, this is a real job. You are working with, and dispatched by real people. Unlike the apps we are careful not to over-hire, so we can keep our full-time people busy instead of waiting around and competing for jobs with other drivers. In exchange, we expect our drivers to be available and reliable during their scheduled hours.
For more information on how traditional courier work differs from the apps, see
this article.
